Hassan is 6 and has been at Kakunyu School since February 2010. He lives in Bigando, 4 miles from school. He comes to school on a boda-boda (motor scooter taxi) or his father carries him, which takes more than an hour. He’s missed a lot of school.

He had hydrocephalus when he was born, which affects the movement of water in the body. Water accumulates in the skull so the head swells unless it’s treated in hospital straight away, where a shunt can be fitted to allow the water to move in the correct way. He does now have a shunt, but it was fitted too late.

If he is supported by the teachers and his parents, he may be able to walk one day.

His parents are very poor and have been able to pay only 5000 shillings towards his schooling – about £1.40
